re: an often-absent teacher
Unfortunately, this can happen in conservatories a lot -- usually when a conservatory or graduate music department has managed to obtain a "name" teacher, who has an active performing career and promises to fit in their students around the career.
A friend of mine grew tired of studying only about half of the time (when her teacher was off performing, the students got complimentary "coaching" sessions with a staff accompanist who knew nothing about opera), and switched teachers.
