what about presenting the material in the clearest manner possible? that would require understanding the material and, most likely, developing a certain viewpoint on it first, then presenting it to the audience as it has been understood by the performer. regardless of style, there is a point to all material.
i have quoted bernstein on this before. he said "you know you have put yourself into a piece when there is a complete erasure of ego". all this talk of 'loving the audience', 'taking ownership', 'giving', 'taking', etc. is all about ego and not about the material.
in my opinion, nervousness and stage fright come from trying either to do something that one doesn't know how to do or, from trying for a result that one has no control over. trying to control an audience is ridiculous. show them the material and let them decide for themselves.
