I have to agree with you, Ernie: no one will ever top Mary Martin.
However, I thought Glenn Close did a credible job, and though Harry
Connick, Jr. would not have been my first choice, it was better than
I had anticipated. The Emile de Becque (can you say Billy Goat's Gruff?)
looked the part, but my only question was: "Was Jose van Dam too busy?" or
for that matter "Didn't someone think that this would have been a
wonderful way to introduce Bryn Terfel to the general public?"
