Gretry was born in Liege, which is now part of Francophone Belgium, in
1741. He is generally credited for founding the French opera-comique
school (i.e., operas with spoken dialogue rather than recitatives).

There is some information on him at the French Foreign Ministry
Gallery of Composers website:

http://www.france.diplomatie.fr/culture/france/musique/composit/gretry.html

This page includes a sound clip from his opera LA CARAVANE DU CAIRE (The
Caravan of Cairo).

A complete list of Gretry's works appears at:
http://idt.net/~johnp3/ume/gretry.html

The libretto for Gretry's most famous opera, ZEMIRE AND AZOR appears at:
http://www.castle.net/~rfrone/sfo/libretti/zemire.htm

A MIDI file of Zemire's ariette "La fauvette avec ses petites" appears at:
http://www.castle.net/~rfrone/music/zemire01.mid

A synopsis and link to the French libretto of his RICHARD COEUR DE LION
are at:
http://www.castle.net/~rfrone/sfo/sfo-q-r.htm#richard_coeur_de_lion

Other operas and opera-ballets by Gretry include ISABELLE ET GERTRUDE, LE
HURON, SYLVAIN, LE JUGEMENT DE MIDAS, DENYS LE TYRAN - MAITRE D'ECOLE A
CORINTHE, LE CALIFE DE BAGDAD, L'AMANT JALOUX, CEPHALE ET PROCRIS, and LE
TABLEAU PARLANT.

There is a streaming RealAudio file of Sumi Jo singing an excerpt from "Je

There is a streaming RealAudio excerpt from the overture of LE JUDGEMENT
DE MIDAS at:
http://search.borders.com/fcgi-bin/hurlpnm?~z-473645/0142586_0101_07_0002.ra

Gretry also wrote the music that later had English text set on it by Lidie
Edmunds to create the popular hymn "My Faith Has Found A Resting Place".
His Concerto for Violin #5 in A minor (op 37) is a favourite party piece
for solo violinsts.

A Belgian documentary about Gretry won the Cannes Film Festival
documentary prize in 1955.
