Subject:  Re: Some advice for young composers (getting OFFISH)

Let me re-pharase that first part.

If you are going to write your own texts, get some training in this
area. Several great composers wrote their own texts at least part of
the time:

Wagner
Boito
Menotti
Cornelius
Berlioz

In the case of Menotti and Boito they were good enough librettists to
write libretti for other composers (Barber and Verdi). But I have
some songs on my desk sent to me by an aspiring composer and the
music is good enough, but the texts (all original) are just too
dreadful for me to even consider.

Many young composers are able to befriend young poets (sort of like
La Boheme!) and work collaboratively. This is a great idea, and worth
exploring!
