taylor,
i would conclude from this statement that the concept of registers is then an artificial concept placed on a voice that may have no registers at all. and, that it is our expectations of certain sounds that place an unnatural 'sameness' throughout a range of the voice that should be constantly changing rather than remaining the same. when one sings into a pillow, the perceptions of timbre are largely removed. it is amazing to me how much more easily almost everybody, in fact everybody i have ever had do this, sings from bottom to top without a break.
i can't remember where i read this but, i remember someone refering to writings by someone dealing with the voice outside of singing refering to three different uses of the voice; fry, modal and whistle. whistle was described as literally whistling with one's vocal folds in the same way one would whistle using the lips, the description of fry i don't remember and modal was described as that with which we speak or sing. they did go on to say that the ideas of 'chest' and 'head' were perceptual delusions.
(i wish i could remember where i read that however, i must say that my recollection of it might just have easily been something that came to me in a dream.)
