I wanted to let one of our physicians answer this question, but I did want
to comment on a single item mentioned in John's original post. He
mentioned doing situps. If you don't learn anything else about physical
fitness this year, learn this: situps work your hip flexion muscle, not
your abdominals. They also have been known to contribute to hernia and
back problems. Even the army is currently rethinking their position on
this exercise (as they did deep knee bends a generation ago - after many
military personnel had developed chronic knee problems.)
