At an Orff convention last fall, I learned about using a slide whistle or a laser pointer (up and down the wall) to get kids to practice approximating pitch. The kids love to swoop up and find a pitch, and, yes, it has helped, especially with some of the boys, who need to be reassured that it really is still manly to be able to retain your "voice for singing along with the cartoons" (higher voice).
