Dear Listers,
LSU is putting on Carmen this coming weekend. Paul Groves, who is
a graduate of LSU is singing two of the four performances. He just
arrived back to Baton today after he sang Cosi at the MET last night.
I sat in on the rehearsal today and watched Groves and his wife
Charlotte Hellekant(Carmen) rehearse the entire opera.
While Groves is certainly not a 'spinto', he sounds quite good in
our LSU Union theater which isn't very large. He is not charging LSU
any money for these performances. My guess is that he wanted to sing
Jose and the MET considers him their Mozart specialist- so the LSU
venue looked appealing. He has a really fine instrument and is a
good actor as well. I would also add the he and his wife are very
friendly to the students.
If anyone lives in or near Louisiana- come see Carmen with Paul
Groves this Friday at 730pm.
