Well, let me add fuel to the coutertenor fire. Over the last couple of evenings I've been listening to David Daniels' Handel arias disc. It's truly astonishing, in both the beauty and refinement of the singing and the taste and skill of the ornamentation. I might also add that I've never before heard such sensitive orchestral work from Roger Norrington. For those of you still not convinced: this is a countertenor without a hooty tone, with perfect tuning even on the little fiddly notes, with no unconfortable breaks or cracks. And the music! I remember la Bartoli singing Vivaldi's "sposa son disprezzata" as creating something that had not existed in my experience till then. That floating world has become sustantiated by her recent Vivaldi disc, and this one. And, Tako, Isabelle or whoever: It would be nice to know occasionally what is happening on the sister list. Can it be that the spirit of what I imagine to be Vocalist has really moved there? john who is thinking of Salads on the Hams - must be lunchtime.
