Some of us have found a socially acceptable outlet for our 'OFF-TOPIC' rantings: vocalist-backstage. Perhaps you are noticing the redirected traffic...
Also, I've gotten involved in TheCountertenors@yahoogroups.com, so now they get subjected to the majority of my loud-mouth thoughts on the countertenor voice. More than a few times it was implied to me that countertenors were not an acceptable topic of conversation at vocalist.
It's sad, I got the most flack from those people who hardly ever contributed to the discussions. Basically the attitude that I got from those people was that I am not an academic (though i am, actually), and that I don't have a painfully narrow sense of what vocalism is, so I have no business participating in technical discussions.
It's ironic, because I always felt completely welcomed by those who had more knowlege than me (DMAs with open minds and patience beyond belief, seasoned professional singers) and even felt they were interested in my peculiar slant on things. The negative vibes were generally from those who could probably stand to learn from the discussions I often generated.
Vocalist is a wonderful place, and I will probably stay subscribed forever. Still, I say with only the purest affection for the group that perhaps something needs to change for people to want to stay?
Love, Tako
