I've never heard anyone sing out of tune in a way that sounded like
comfortable, easy singing. Instead, the sound is such that even if
the tone were heard out of context (i.e., without a reference pitch
to use to decide whether or not it was in tune) it would still sound
out of tune. Might that be the case withh the singers you're talking
about? Maybe what I'm describing is the same as what Randy Buescher
described as registration issues.
