I know it's mostly mind-over-matter, but does anyone have some good advice on how to sustain high notes, especially those at the ends of phrases. For some reason, it seems like every aria I'm working on these days requires me to hover on a high F, G, or A for at least 2 measures. I've already given up actually appending the final consonants in an effort to keep the vowel open and the palate raised. But even so, and even being careful to breathe with the end of the phrase in mind, I'm still not consistently able to "make it" through the entire duration of the note. I'm having particular problems with the final F (right on my upper break) at the end of "Acerba volutta" from ADRIANA LECOUVREUR - I have to hold it 3 measures plus an eighth note, and it's all I can do to keep from turning *blue*!
Any tricks, hints, self-psyches, or other advice would be very helpful.
