I believe this is one of those no-win situations. I have yet to be in any choir which required a "uniform" dress that wasn't hated by most, if not all the women in the group. I agree that a simple 3/4 sleeve, round neck, black a-line is one's best bet.
In our college choir, the director's graduate assistant chose a sleeveless, slit-neck with gathers right below the bosom. EVERYBODY hated it, except the gal who chose it. She even used the same pattern in different colors years later for her bridesmaids' dresses. Yeesh!
Rosy Freudenstein, mezzo, who finds even the rags that are my costume in Boris Godunov to be preferable to that black choir dress!
