My (quite late) response:
I have heard very good things about the Pimsleur language system (books and CDS, or books and tapes), which is available for Italian and German that I know of, and likely more languages as well. amazon.com has them -- the only problem is that they're quite expensive. I believe the first "set" for Italian is close to $300. At that point you might want to opt for the college course! But the self-study option would certainly give you more time flexibility. . . .
Has anyone out there used Pimsleur at all?
