One more affordable way of hearing/seeing opera might be to go to some productions done by smaller companies. I would imagine most larger cities have at least a few, and some of them are quite good. It may be a risk, but if you don't like the performance at least you haven't cleaned out your bank account to go see it.
As for larger houses, sure, there are ways of knocking a lot of money off the ticket price. But for the most part I have to agree that the prices are a lot more expensive than corresponding tickets for theatre, etc. (Though the gap is certainly closing quickly, thanks to places like Disneyland - er, I mean Broadway.) I'm sure the production costs for large-scale opera are mind-boggling, but I do wish that more effort was made to make opera accessible to everyone who wants to see it - not just people that can afford to plunk down about $100 a performance. Apparently there are some world-class singers who weren't ever able to see an opera at a major house until they were IN one. __________________________________________________ http://im.yahoo.com
