Well, the Internet is the place to start! If you run Windows, you probably already can play MIDI files. There are great MIDI viewers available (MIDI carries not only the sounds, like a recording, but the notes on a page, like printed music).
If you have a keyboard (the Panasonic that sits next to my computer is no tech wonder, believe me), chances are there are MIDI in- and out- ports in the back. You can hook the keyboard to the back of your CPU (same input as joystick), download a music program like Note Worthy Composer or MIDI Studio, spend a couple of frustrating hours configuring your Control Panel and whatnot, and away you go - you play notes on the keyboard, they appear on the staff on your screen.
Have a great time. Experiment. It's amazing how much you learn just by noodling around..
