I believe that the line is "spare him his life from this monstrosity". Anybody else think that they sing "Beelzebub has a devil for a sideboard" in this one too?
I set the George Herbert poem "Life" for a SATB chorus when I was at university. The last verse has the following lines.
"Farewell deare flowers sweetly your time ye spent Fit while ye lived for smell or ornament And after death for cures"
I don't need to tell you what that can sound like, but I was horribly embarassed when I noticed it whilst conducting the first concert performance!!
