I tend to lean toward a "no fear" type of approach here. Go after those notes methodically never allowing tension to become present. However, in the initial stages just get it in your head that you haven't hit a wall, simply an eye-opening opportunity to stretch your expectations of yourself. That is the mental side of it. Personally I put a lot of stock in the mind part of the singing equation. I personally believe we can never sing beyond our perceptions of ourselves. So just go after it without excuse and if it's still not there, wait, it may come in time but not now especially if you are anywhere under 25 - 27 years of age. Your voice is still likely to have some growth to experience yet. Aside from that, I think the physical part of the equation was covered well by an earlier response which I will simply echo.
By God's Grace, Jerry Polman Proud Baritone <--is that an oxymoron?
