when refering to head voice and chest voice, i think a distinction needs to be made between resonance and vocal fold activity. too often, it is assumed that if there is more sensation in the 'mask' then there must be more crico-thyroid activity. richard miller has suggested that the appearence of the singer's formant is the cause of vibrations in the zygomatic arch. where very few instruments, if any, produce sound in the range of 2500-3200 hz., if we are to take advantage of this gap it behooves us to go for that zygomatic 'zing'. i would suggest that, in the low range, singing or speaking, a thicker set of vocal folds will more easily cause the singer's formant to appear and, thereby, allowing the singer of speaker to create more sound with less effort. in simple terms- chest voice in the 'mask'. you may now lock me up for a very long time.
