Dear List:
I'd like to point out a few things that I think we're over looking.
First of all, it is not an issue of classical vocalists vs. pop, rock, jazz,
etc., vocalists. The majority of the list may be classical vocalists, but
technique is technique. No matter what you sing, when it comes to the proper
way to achieve a singing goal without damaging the voice we all benefit from
the knowledge we can share with one another.
Secondly, it is not enough to just talk about music. Any LISTSERV can
talk about music or who they do or don't like. Vocalist netiquette clearly
states that this LISTSERV was created to discuss the studying voice and
issues related to voice. The reason why some examples of singers like Mariah,
Charlotte, et al. come up is because a lot of potential singers are imitating
them and picking up their bad vocal habits. It is essential that people who
are knowledgeable about this speak up or we'll have a generation of young
singers who will burn out before their prime or damage their voice. The
record companies market these singers to death to the public and in turn the
public is spending tons of money for mediocrity.
Lastly, this is a place to learn. We have singers of all different
levels and ages and I can honestly say that 99.9% of the time when someone
asks a question they get a friendly response and useful information. If you
are not that knowledgeable about terminology or concepts ASK. By reading the
different posts you will gain information and build upon what you already
know. Please don't reason that it's o.k. to clog up people's mailboxes w/ I
love Backstreet Boys, Mariah Carey, and N'SYNC b/c you feel like since you
don't understand something it isn't relevant to you. Like I said before this
is a place for learning and mutual support for active and potential
vocalists. Let's use this listserv for its intended purpose.

Sincerely,
Al
