in his book 'the four voices of man', jerome hines talks about four different
placements of the voice. the 'second' voice is a placement of the voice in
the dome of the hard pallette. this was a placement he said both he and
robert merrill were taught (can't beat merrill for richness). could this be
what you are refering to?
