My vocal teacher makes me do this to identify the focus:
-start with a hum (usually i use "n" b/c it focused really well) this works
better if it's higher, i start around A above middle C.
-try to put a vowel (i use "ooo") into the same area. so it sounds like
"neeeeeeewwwwwww" =) hope this helps.
