Dr. Johnson never had to 1) ride the Northern Line during rush hour; 2)
smell the exhaust of 2 billion diesel taxis in the Euston High Road; 3)
watch "Neighbours" because it was the best/only thing on TV; 4) navigate the
M25; 5) cycle round the Hammersmith Broadway; 6) pay 850 quid a month for a
studio flat above a tandori restaurant; 7) shop for groceries in W1; 8)
drive a Mini on the North Circular 9) listen to John Major make a speech;
10) ever, ever, ever, be subjected to the Spice Girls...

I loved London and in many ways it broke my heart to leave (Wigmore Hall;
Kew Gardens; the Bell and Crown in Strand-on-the-Green; Cibo; Steve Wright
in the Afternoon (is he still on?); the South Bank at sunset; Harvey
Nicks....) but big cities, for my money, are fit domiciles solely for the
young, the rich, or the people who feel it's their calling in life to inform
others that the world is about to end.
