Hello Molly. Well, you have just stated what happens in many professions -
not just music. It has happened to me in nursing (I am an RN). Obviously,
from what you say, you can sing and, until lately, you LOVE to sing. My
advice - get through the things you have to get through in school to get
your degree. I am kind of thinking you should stay in music and, if
possible, transfer to another school. Then, as much as possible, stay away
from the negatives you are encountering. No matter how strong you are,
inwardly and musically, they will pull you down so wipe their dust off your
feet and move on. Try to find places, venues where you can sing just as you
did in choir. Demand, as much as a student can, that you get your full
voice lesson or change instructors. I have never ever understood why some
teachers, company managers, nurses, etc., etc., think yelling is effective.
I think it mainly builds the yellers low self esteem to pull others down.
Yelling is not a technique to use to produce quality in any field of
endeavor. Also, try to surround yourself with singers, musicians,
performers, people who have really good self esteem as well as talent.
These people welcome other talented people. They see that by joining
together everyone improves and they are not threatened or afraid to give a
compliment or a solo. Most of all, no matter what you do, do not give up
singing. Your voice and your passion has been placed in your heart for a
reason. Keep on going. Best of luck. Nora - who doesn't yell and loves
being around good, talented people who share and help each other.
