Thank you for making that point! The primitive recording apparatus was
downright scary for many singers, and it did not capture many at their best
(Nordica, for example). Even today, from what I am told, it is easier for
engineers to capture a small, bright sound (Battle in her heyday) than it is
to do justice to a really large voice, whether live or in the studio.
