I think that sometimes the British sense of humour, which includes a lot of sarcasm, can be difficult to translate into written form. I know some of the things I have posted in jest have been taken seriously. So I agree that we should add the odd bracketed aside eg. (joke!) to stop people from
taking things too literally.
To clarify, by the way, I am British and believe a lot of the listers are from the States. I am not trying to suggest that what I have said is true of every british lister, it's just my opinion!
