Briefly, this piece looks so simple that it is deceiving. One needs great breath support to seamlessly glide and build upon each slow phrase. A singer must never sound like they are in a hurry to come off the higher notes ( I dont have my copy with me to be most specific), & never sound out of breath. In other words, the sound must describe to the listener peace, strength and absolute beauty. If you listen to recordings of Leontyne Price and Pavarotti, you can hear even in their performances a sort of discomfort with some phrases. But if you master this aria, it is a jewel to cherish!
