Another technique I have found helpful in imagining a "solid base" is the kapalabathi breathing I learned at yoga classes. I'm not sure about the spelling but it apparently means "shining skull" (and is also good for clearing blocked sinuses). You contract your lower abdomen and breathe out through your nose in rapid bursts, so that inhalation is automatic and tension-free.
The way I was taught this, it feels very much like the "ru-pu-tu-ku" exercise used by some singing teachers.
