Dear Yvonne, Deborah, and List;
thanks to Deborah for clarifying her experience and to Yvonne for detailing her opinion. I agree with both of you in the sense that I wouldn't take a new student without meeting him/her in person first, and that indeed I make them sing certain scales in the first lesson to figure out their potential and level of ability. What I meant when I said that "accepting a student" was bugging me is that I don't discriminate by the student's level at all, and that's how Deborah came across when she said that her new teacher accepted her as a new student because her speaking voice revealed a singer. But the chemistry between student and teacher definitely plays a role, and fortunately until now I haven't had anyone walk into my studio that I couldn't work with at all. I only "dismiss" students who either don't pay regularily and on time, or those who I believe have damaged vocal cords and refuse to go see a doctor even after I express my concerns. I feel that would be unsafe.
