For what it's worth, I like Mariah Carey. She does that commercial pop about as well as it's done these days. In fact, comparing her to what I hear on the radio these days she is really quite good. I admit that I don't seek her music out--I just don't bristle when my mid 40s brother put it on.
Horne and Bartoli, well now, I have heard many make complaints of one type of another. Just the same, they are known for singing florid music that was the style in a given era. I think it is more appropriate to criticize the music of that era than those two artists. As for all that vocal fireworks and coloratura--I like that too. Very much. It can rivet me to my seat and in context does have some meaning. Again, it's a stylistic idiom.
That's just one man's opinion.
