Hello Jessica

The most historically accurate version of the songs in the 24 Italian can be
found in 26 Italian Songs published by Alfred Publishing and edited by John
Payton (Sp?). This book corrects most of the errors in the original 24
Italian Songs book and gives an idiomatic translation as well as a singing
translation, a word for word translation, and an IPA transcription to
assist you in pronunciation. It can be purchased with CDs of the
accompaniments (which are all a more accurate realization of the composer's
original than the older book) and, finally it give a short history of each
song, information about the composer, etc. It is a fine bit of editing.

There are those who prefer the older book because they have grown used to
its 19th century romantic school versions of these timeless songs but that
should not be a major consideration when selecting a publication. What you
should want is as accurate a rendition of a work as is possible, that is,
as close as modern scholarship can make it to what the composer intended.
In my opinion, this is achieved with the Payton publication
