Yikes! Susi, I had never heard this! I always did a voiced gargle with salt water until in researching vocal hygiene, I read that it was better not to involve the vocal folds. But no explanation was given. That's really frightening. I learned to gargle as a small child by watching my Mom with her Listerine mouthwash and by observing mouthwash gargling in TV commercials - all voiced garglers. If it's as dangerous as you report, I wonder why there isn't more said about it and why it's still represented on TV this way without huge hue and cry from medical professionals?
