To Susi,
I have taught singing using the Suzuki method for years. Most of the students are children, but I teach adults whenever there is a need. The basic premise is that it is possible and desirable to learn to make a good sound right away no matter what instrument (or voice) you are using. Students learn by ear rather than to have to learn to sight read music immediately. When I have taught group lessons I have used some warm-up exercises, then promptly encouraged each of those in the group to perform something by memory as soon as possible. They do not all have to use the same songs, however I try to help them select songs at the level they can handle, and in a progressive order beginning with some easy ones. Each song should have a particular teaching point. For example: The children's song, "Hot Cross Buns" could be a lesson in how to produce (sing) separated notes followed by a legato phrase. Here are some songs that I like to use for beginning adults: Long, Long Ago Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes Annie Laurie The Harp That Once Thro' Tara's Halls
I hope this helps. If you want to ask me any specific questions, e-mail me privately.
Musically yours, Marcia McCarry
