Hi all: In the midst of all the Christmas planning stuff I just wanted to chime in my 2 cents worth regarding vocal competitions. For those of you working toward musical theatre, we enter our students in the Canadian National Dance Association regional and national competitions because they have quite a fine element for song & dance. As we all know, being in a musical more often than not requires the singer to be able to dance and act and what better time to gather all these skills then while you're working on your voice. The judges for the above competition are quite impressive because they are working individuals in the field of "performance". Last year the nationals were in Calgary and one of the judges was Mathew Clark from New York (he's a dancer/choreographer/teacher in NY and has been in some great shows). The year before, in Toronto, we had Pam ?????? who books all the entertainment for Disney World Florida and Chris?????? who choreographs 'and stages all the shows performed on Carnival Cruise lines. These people are working as professionals in their chosen field but they are so responsive and encouraging toward students still learning their craft. The competition has numerous levels up to age 50 and over...what a kick! So, if you are looking for musical theatre competitions for experience and guidance I'm sure the USA would have something similar. After all, the 3 judges I've mentioned work for big US companies.
