Having taken Greek in my theology degree I learned that the X in
Christmas is an abbreviated version signifying Christ.

You may be acquainted with the Chi-Rho an X and P, with the P
intersecting the X. Chi-Rho are the first two letters of
Ch-r-i-s-t-o-s. Similarly, the X in Xmas is the Chi. In Greek the
Ch of Christos is X.
