That was Dr. Samuel Johnson (the great lexicographer, essayist, poet, etc.).
I believe that what he meant was really the intellectual interaction and
stimulation that was, for the most part, available only in the cities and
universities at the time. Now we have the Internet--I wonder what he would
think of that!
