You may be too old to hope for a career at the Metropolitan Opera, but you are certainly not too old to start voice lessons. And if you turn out to be a true contralto, as you imply, your age will be far less of a "handicap" than it would be were you an aspiring soubrette soprano. You should be able to concertise well into your 60s and even 70s if you get a good, solid technique through dilligent vocal study.
