<< Mariah is truely great because she has mastered the 'whistle tone'. It's something we all have a young age and unlearn. It is a different kind of vocal tone due to the way it is produced. It's not regular phonation. We learned this in my Vocal Pedagogy class. She may not be utilizing her full potential, but she definately has a developed technique. And I agree, she really should wear more clothing. >>
Being able to sing in that register does not mean she has a developed technique. The rest of her voice is disconnected and there are signs of vocal pathology. Listen to her two cuts on the last Pavarotti and Friends CD. She sounds horrible. All the higher notes in Hero are omitted (and they aren't all that high) and the notes she manages to get out are pushed. When she attempts to sing softly, it is all air accompanied by a very slight horse sound. Her lack of a good technique has trashed her voice. That she might be able to still sing in whistle register means nothing. In fact, according to Dr. Robert Bastian some singers gain a whistle range after lesions occur because the fold actually seem to be able to extremely damp after this occurs.
