Hi Vocalisers,

Has anybody noticed an improvement in singing technique due to flute playing? I recently started playing (after a long break) and am wondering about the effect that this could be having on my singing. Since I started breaking up my practice sessions into a singing-flute-singing pattern, I've
noticed an improvement in breath control while singing (particularly when it comes to slow coloratura arias like Handel's O Sleep).

The strange thing is that my flautist's breath control is comparatively poor. Playing the flute seems to be doing more for my vocal breath control than for my woodwind one. (LOL!)

What about the effect of flute playing on high pianissimo? This may be my imagination, but it seems to be easier now to focus the sound/resonance through the head.

I'm also wondering whether flute playing could help some of you who are experiencing problems with lip tension. (Perhaps the contrast in "lip-feel" could help??)

Regards,

Lisa
