having experimented with both, as an aid to basic vocal technique, i would have to say that bugs creates greater ease in reaching the extremes of one's range. in exercises where the student is asked to perform two runs of a scale segment, i.e. 1-6-1-6-1, the first run being bugs, the student need only to drop the tongue on the second run to get a good sound, providing nothing else goes out that window. ah! there's the rub. one of the strangest sensations i get, when doing this exercise myself, is the sense that the sound is 'vanishing' into the mask. the chipmunk sound, on the other hand, seems to lead one to the promises and, ultimately, the disappointments of the 'voce finta' richard miller has cautioned us against. i hope this is helpful.
