I too have read at health sites that menthol can cause dryness. So, I try to pick my battles. If my biggest problem is that I'm congested and I can't breathe through my nose - then menthol it is! Nothing opens up my passages faster and if I can't breathe, I can't sing, dry or not. Sometimes, I'll use Tiger Balm, externally, of course!, and massage it into my temples, on my chest and at the TM joint and behind my jaw. It also seems to help to relieve the congestion and doesn't dry me out at all.
If I'm dry, however, I don't reach for a mentholated cough drop. I super-hydrate, drink tea with licorice or honey, pop a lemon drop etc.
Sheesh, it's hard work being a singer in the cold season!
