Well Isabelle,
I teach my students a type of weight resistance technique for the diaphragm. Lie on your back and place a heavy-ish book on your diaphragm (not too large in dimensions though) and place your hands on top. You can then use the 5 vowels sounds as follows: Hah (as in father), heh (as in head), hih (as in hid), hoh (as in hot) and hooh (as in who) either speaking or use on a single note. If you are singing them then they are 6 short notes with a breath in between and then an extended note. You must push out with each note, especially the long one. Just a thought though, those vowel sounds are Australian versions!!! Next stand and imagine being sucked down through the floor and you must pull back slightly to stay where you are. Feel this around the diaphragm/midriff area especially. Sing whilst maintaining this. It is important to centre your voice around the diaphragm area rather than singing in your throat. Dont make the "suction" too hard, be gentle with yourself and increase only when you feel like you are achieving results. You should feel an increase of power and richness of resonance....and everything!!
